In reply to your telegram of the 20th. January-

You may make the following announcement:-

"News has been received from Singapore that as a

result of dissatisfaction and jealousy aroused by recent promotion a portion of the 5th. Light Infantry refused to obey orders and a serious riot ensued. Local and neighbouring forces assisted by landing parties from British and Allied ships quelled the riot, The Governor of the Straits Settlements reports that all is now quiet and no property has been destroyed though he regrets that some loss of life was caused".
